Real Estate Continuing Education Courses

Education Requirements

Real Estate Continuing Education

Every approved school must offer every calendar year a course designed to help licensees meet the continuing education requirements. This course or courses shall be in addition to the prelicense and postlicense courses offered. The Commission requires that each real estate licensee complete 36 hours of approved continuing education for each four-year renewal period, including a 3-hour course on License Law. A licensee may complete the continuing education requirement by taking courses at any time during the renewal period.

The Real Estate Commission, through the Real Estate Education and Recovery Fund, sponsors several continuing education courses.  The courses are administered by Approved Schools for a nominal fee and may be found here.

For Continuing Education courses, there are unique requirements for which approved schools must adhere, including:

  • Duration of Classes – no school may offer a continuing education course of fewer than three credit hours. A credit hour is defined as fifty (50) minutes of instruction. In-class instruction and testing in any course must not exceed seven and one half (7.5) hours per day.
  • Subject Areas – any continuing education course which does not seek to improve knowledge and skills in real estate brokerage activity in the subject areas listed in the curriculum section under Prelicense and Postlicense Courses must have the prior written authorization of the Commission.
  • Courses exceeding 24 hours – the Commission will accept any course for continuing education credit that exceeds twenty-four hours in length only if such course also meets all requirements for approval as a sales postlicense course.
  • Repeating Course – a licensee who has successfully completed an approved course to meet any part of such licensee’s continuing education credit may not repeat that course unless at least one full year has passed since the completion of that course.
  • Instructors– only instructors with appropriate experience and knowledge of the content areas of continuing education courses may teach these courses.
  • Student Course Completion Certificates– schools must transmit course completion data directly to the Commission through the Online Course Completion System. While not required by the Commission, a school may present a certificate to its students if it chooses.
